History and tradition of beer in Friuli Venezia Giulia
17 March 2025Friuli Venezia Giulia stands out as one of the most dynamic Italian regions in the field of scientific and technological research, thanks to a combination of scientific excellence, innovative capacity, and cutting-edge infrastructure, set within a dynamic entrepreneurial fabric and a solid tradition of collaboration between universities and industry, which creates the ideal conditions for turning scientific discoveries into concrete solutions.
With a high concentration of academic institutions and research centers, the area represents an exemplary case of how collaboration between the scientific world, businesses, and institutions can generate innovation and growth. Trieste emerges as the hub of this ecosystem: the city is home to a scientific community of around 10,400 researchers, active in many of the region’s scientific and research institutions, such as Area Science Park – a large science and technology park that promotes innovation and collaboration between universities, research entities, and businesses – and Elettra Synchrotron, one of the most important research laboratories in the world in the field of physics and biomedicine. The National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS) contributes with cutting-edge research in marine and seismic monitoring, while the National Research Council (CNR) operates through institutes covering a wide range of disciplines.
However, the region’s scientific vocation is not limited to Trieste: in Friuli, the International Center for Mechanical Sciences (CISM) represents a key reference for applied research in engineering, with a particular focus on international collaborations, while the Innova FVG Consortium plays a crucial role in technology transfer, supporting local businesses in accessing funding and specialized expertise. At the same time, the Polo Tecnologico Alto Adriatico supports local companies in industrial innovation, fostering synergies with universities and key sectors such as medicine, aerospace, and ICT.
It is therefore no surprise that Friuli Venezia Giulia hosts numerous scientific conferences, thanks to the presence not only of research and medical hubs and universities but also of scenic attractions and hospitality that make the region an ideal location for conventions. Beyond advanced research, however, the region – due to its scientific vocation – is also distinguished by its science outreach, in a continuous dialogue between research and citizens, cultivated through various initiatives: events such as Trieste Next, the research festival, stand out for its multidisciplinary approach, attracting a diverse audience every year with meetings, practical demonstrations, and debates. The Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, for its part, has successfully merged scientific content with science fiction narrative for years, offering the public a way to engage with science through cinema.
It is this integrated approach, where science constantly engages with the territory and its needs, that makes Friuli Venezia Giulia a point of reference in the national and international scientific landscape.
