Trends for 2025 in events’ universe
13 January 2025The holiday season ends with Epiphany, a day associated with various local traditions, even in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
One example is the ancient custom of the Pignarûl, which involves piling up wood, hay, and other materials to create a bonfire that is lit on the evening of January 5th or 6th, depending on the area. Customs like this, which center around the element of fire, are linked to pagan celebrations of the Celtic deities of the sun and light.
Throughout the regional territory, there are many examples and variations, such as the Pignarûl of Tarcento, which burns on a hilltop, among the ruins of the Cjastelàt (Castle), creating a very evocative effect. In Comeglians and Pesariis, wooden wheels set on fire are rolled down the hills. In some locations, at the top of the bonfire, a human-shaped effigy called the vècia (old woman), representing winter and the old year, is placed, which burns to make way for the new year and spring.
