Ernesto Illy

Ernesto Illy is among the Triestine personalities who have left a significant mark on the spirit of the city and beyond.

As the son of the founder of illycaffè, he described himself as “a cocktail of science and business.” A graduate in chemistry, he spearheaded scientific and technological research within the company, aiming for the perfect espresso. From 1963 to 2005, he served as the president of the family business, was honored as a Cavaliere del Lavoro (Knight of Labour), and was an Italian pioneer in the concept of branding. The Ernesto Illy Foundation, dedicated to regenerative economics and sustainable business, bears his name.

In recognition of Ernesto Illy’s prominent role in entrepreneurship and his eclectic sensitivity and initiative, which have greatly contributed to Trieste and beyond, the Generali Convention Center Trieste has named a hall after him in Warehouse 27. This hall, accessible from the Illy Foyer where the illy café is located, can accommodate up to 272 people.
